Pongola Game Reserve Fishing Report

Water Clarity:
Murky in the river section due to influx of water from the Pongola River after the recent good rains received.

Fishing Area:
The bay on the right as you pass where the Fish Eagle Safari Boat is moored, Pump Station, the bay as you pass the KZN Wildlife campsites towards the border, Elephant Bay in 3- 5m of water and towards the mountain near the trees in the water. Elephant Bay continues to be the most popular fishing spot. The mouth of the dam where the clean and dirty water meet was also a good fishing spot.

Average Size:
Tiger Fish caught during the month ranged from 1kg 4.0kg.

Biggest Fish:
The largest one of 4kg was caught on sardine. Chicken livers, chicken hearts and live bait also worked well.

Other Conditions:
The Dam level has increased by 5.99% since last month due to the good rains received in the catchment and on the reserve. This is good news and we hope that the level will continue to rise before the winter season arrives.

Total Tiger Fish:
An average of 558 Tiger Fish were caught this month off the Pongola Game Reserve boats, with a few good-sized tigers caught.


Other Species:
A few Barbel and Bream were also caught while fishing for Tiger Fish. Bream fishing was very successful using worms and chicken hearts.

Bait of the Month:
Sardines. Chicken livers, chicken hearts and live bait also worked well.
